Dr Surendra Kumar Agarwal is working as Professor in the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, India. He completed his basic medical training and MS General Surgery training from King George's Medical College, Lucknow and then got trained at SGPGIMS in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery with MCh degree. Following this he went on to get further training in Vascular and Microvascular surgery at First Department of Surgery, Nagoya University Medical School for one year through prestigious Monbusho Scholarship that he was awarded.

He joined SGPGIMS as assistant professor in CVTS in 1997 and has been working since then. He has gradually moved up the professional ladder and became Professor in CVTS in 2012. He has worked as Head of the department from 2004-2007 and has been holding the position of Head, Unit 2 of CVTS since 2008. He was awarded commonwealth fellowship to undergo training in Vascular surgery at Royal Free Hospital, London, UK. He has contributed to the overall development of the unit as well as department in his administrative capacities in addition to his own professional work in form of patient care, teaching, training and research. His interest lies in surgery for valvular heart disease, adult congenital heart surgery, minimal access surgery and surgery for heart failure including heart transplant. He has developed a multidisciplinary team for developing thoracic organ transplant program at SGPGIMS and has secured the license from the Government for the same. The department is being geared up for the same as well. He also is interested in Robotic Surgery and has undergone training for the same.

He is recipient of many awards and distinctions including Monbusho Scholarship (Govt. of Japan), Commonwealth Fellowship, ICRETT fellowship of UICC (for training in Minimal access thoracic surgery at Sapporo University School of Medicine, Japan), Member and then Fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, Fellowship of Cardiological Society of India and Indian Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons and Coveted Meherji Mehta Memorial Oration of IACTS. Apart from these, he was awarded Gold Medal in Surgery, Silver Medal and Certificate of Honors in some subjects during his MBBS training.He has also been awarded Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons of England (UK) in Cardiothoracic Surgery. He has also been awarded many travel grants for presenting papers in International Conference.

Dr Agarwal has actively contributed to research, in form of Extramural grant from Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India for multi-institutional phase 2 trial of autologous stem cell therapy in chronic critical limb ischemia. He has participated in many landmark multinational surgery trials including CORONARY trial, STICH trial etc. He has published two book chapters and over 90 research papers in peer reviewed international and national journals of repute.

In addition to the above, Dr Agarwal has contributed in many administrative capacities in the institute and is currently helping Department of Medical Education, Govt of UP, as Chairman of the committee for formulating specifications for the equipment to be procured for various institutions. He is also contributing to Medical Education as Examiner, Expert of selection and research committees, reviewer for Journals.
